Story

The series begins with the execution of Gol D. Roger, a man known as the King of the Pirates. Before Roger is executed, he told the  world about the legend of his treasure, One Piece. Roger’s death caused the New Era of Pirate ( Dai Kaizoku Jidai) as countless pirate set out to look for his treasure.

 After 20 years since Roger’s execution, a young boy from East Blue, Monkey D. Luffy, was inspired by the pirate known as “Red-Haired” Shanks to set off on a journey to find Roger’s treasure and to be a Pirate King someday. Luffy ate a Devil Fruit called Gum-Gum,a treasure that Shank’s pirate discovered, giving him the ability to stretch his body to unimaginable limits but loses his ability to swim. When Luffy was thrown into the sea by a group of Bandits and was about to be eaten by sea monster, Shanks was able to save him it time losing Shanks left arm. Shanks gave his straw hat to Luffy before he left the village and Luffy promised to give it back to him when he becomes a great pirate, that’s why Luffy is very determined to be a pirate king.

 Along the way, he organizes and leads a nine-member crew named Straw Hat Pirates. Each crew member Luffy encounters has a different character story and eventually become his close friends, including the pirate hunter Roronoa Zoro, thief Nami, the liar and cowardly Ussop, chef Sanji, the doctor reindeer Tony Tony Chopper, the archaeologist Nico Robin, the cyborg shipwright Franky, and the musician skeleton Brook. Luffy and his friends must sail across the Grand Line and reach the New world to search for the lost treasure of Gol D. Roger,  “One Piece”.

One Piece is a Japanese shonen manga series written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda.  It has been serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump since August 4, 1997.

First volume of One Piece released in Japan by Shueisha on December 24, 1997.
